How did Valentine Poems Start?
Poems have become a part of Valentine's Day. Love poems are sent on cards to friends and family. It is thought that around 1415, while imprisoned in the Tower of London during the 100 years war, a French nobleman, the Duke of Orleans, wrote love poems to his wife. Some even mentioned Saint Valentine who had become the patron saint of love. These poems are believed to be the first Valentine's Day poems. One of his poems goes like this:
Wilt thou be mine? dear love, reply,
Sweetly consent, or else deny;
Whisper softly, so none shall know,
Wilt thou be mine? ay or no?
Sweetly consent, or else deny;
Whisper softly, so none shall know,
Wilt thou be mine? ay or no?
